On Writing Fiction...
marbled-pages72dpi"I've always been more comfortable writing fiction. The fictional mindset is profoundly invigorating. There is not the constant pressure to dissect and examine reality to make sense of it; instead, a novelist is in the business of creating something altogether new, building a world apart from reality that only parallels it as far as it serves the writer's purpose. And he gets to do this through the eyes and ears and thoughts and emotions of characters entirely of his own making; characters that in the course of writing become so real they begin to act autonomously, propelling the plot forward in ingenious and unforeseen ways.

"What could possibly be more liberating?"
