New Book Helps People and Black Bears Coexist (April 2006)

People throughout North America are encountering black bears more often these days, with consequences that are often unnerving for humans and deadly for bears. In her new book, Living with Bears: A Practical Guide to Bear Country, Colorado author Linda Masterson dispels myths, dispenses advice from bear experts, and unerringly guides readers down the path to better human-bear relations.
Over 900,000 black bears now inhabit at least forty-one states and nearly every Canadian province. "If you live in bear country (and, unless you're an inner-city resident, you probably do), you owe it to bears to read this smart, useful and long-overdue book," says Ted Williams, Editor-At-Large of Audubon magazine.
"After several years on the Colorado Division of Wildlife's Bear Aware team, I came to realize that almost all bear 'problems' are preventable if people have the information and motivation they need to coexist with bears," says Masterson. "Being bear-prepared protects property and lives, both human and bear."
Masterson's engaging book is filled with real-life stories from wildlife managers, organizations, national parks and communities who've discovered creative, workable ways for people and bears to peacefully share space. Chapters cover everything from understanding black bears and their behavior to bear-proofing your home and community, as well as bear-wise hiking and camping, and avoiding encounters and attacks.
Expert contributors include Steve Herrero, the world's foremost expert on bear attacks and encounters, who says the book is "insightful, well researched and witty…urgently recommended by thousands of 'problem' (victimized) bears that needlessly die each year." Internationally recognized black bear biologist Tom Beck served as Masterson's scientific advisor, and the book is liberally sprinkled with straight-talking "Beck's Bits," tips and insights. Living with Bears is also recommended by Yosemite National Park, the Lake Tahoe BEAR League, and many others.
After reading the book, General Norman Schwarzkopf, the spokesperson for the National Be Bear Aware and Wildlife Stewardship Campaign, said, "As someone who lives, hikes and fishes in bear country, I highly recommend Living with Bears. It will be an invaluable guide for city governments, schools and wildlife professionals and management agencies."
