During mating season in June or July mother bears shoo off half-grown youngsters born the year before so mom can spend some quality alone time with a prospective suitor. Juvenile female black bears are often allowed to move in next door to Mom, but males are sent packing. They’re scared and lonely, and in search of food and security. They’ll explore any food source, including bird feeders and garbage. A firm clap or shout usually sends bears running, and teaches them to avoid people.
